Hair Transplant Techniques
FOLLICULAR UNIT EXTRACTION (FUE)
FUE is a hair transplant method of extracting, or “harvesting,” donor hair in a follicular unit hair transplant procedure. In FUE hair transplant, an instrument is used to make a small, circular incision in the skin around a follicular unit, separating it from the surrounding tissue. The unit is then extracted (pulled) directly from the scalp, without leaving any scar.
ADVANTAGES OF FUE HAIR TRANSPLANT
FUE hair transplantation, on the other hand, offers a number of advantages over FUSS hair transplant procedures. FUE Hair Transplant does not leave a linear scar, nor does it distort the growth angles of hair. FUE is a less invasive hair transplant procedure and therefore requires less healing and recovery time post-Fue hair transplant surgery.
FOLLICULAR UNIT STRIP SURGERY (FUSS)
FUSS is frequently referred to as the “strip” hair transplant procedure. FUSS is an older means of extracting donor hair, whereby a surgeon excises a linear strip of hair and tissue from the back of the scalp. This tissue is then dissected into individual follicular units, by surgical technicians, and then placed in thinning or balding recipient regions. Meanwhile, the wound is closed with the use of sutures.
DRAWBACKS OF FUSS HAIR TRANSPLANT
FUSS Hair Transplant procedure is that the patient is left with a long, linear scar across the donor area, preventing them from being able to sport a short hairstyle in the future, as the hair must be kept longer in order to cover the scar resulting from FUSS Hair Transplant. Of greater concern, however, is that the FUSS Hair Transplant procedure greatly decreases the usable donor hair, affecting the patient’s capacity for future procedures to restore their hair to its full potential.
